Who doesn't love mermaids?
Mermaids are magical creatures that have captured the hearts and imaginations of people for centuries. And let's be honest, who wouldn't want to be a mermaid for a day? If your little one is obsessed with these enchanting beings, why not throw them a fun-filled mermaid party for their birthday? It's the perfect way to make a splash and create memories that will last a lifetime!
My little girl just turned five and while we all love the new (and let's be honest, the old) version of that special movie about a mermaid under the sea, I didn't want Ariel all over the place. Read below to see how we threw an elegant, yet playful mermaid party without a hint of a cartoon in sight.
Set the stage with an underwater wonderland
To create the ultimate mermaid party, we transformed the playroom into an underwater wonderland. The first thing to do is to pick a color scheme. You can easily go pastels for mermaids, but we went with shades of blue, green, and purple to mimic the colors of the ocean. I hung shades of green streamers vertically on every surface I could find to create a "kelp forest". I also used some bowls and ribbons from the Dollar Store to create homemade jellyfish. Hanging them low was a fun idea because the kids had to walk through gaggle of jellyfish to enter the party. Everyone loved it!
Food is fun!
Get creative with your food and drinks by incorporating the mermaid theme as much as you can. Kids love it! We served "ocean water" in the best magical mermaid cups. And I sliced a banana tip in half, stuck a grape in it and drew an eye on it with sharpie. You guys, it was a banana dolphin and it was a total hit. Also, teal sanding sugar can go a long way into making white frosting look like the ocean.
Paint the party favor
As a Mom, I am not a fan of when my child comes home from a birthday party with all those tiny little plastic items that are sure to get lost or end up in the trash. So for my daughter's party, we decided that the kids could paint little wooden treasure boxes to use as the party favor. It was awesome, because it was a creative activity that they all loved and then by the time the party was over the boxes had dried enough for me to fill them with treasures for our friends. It was a sweet and thoughtful way to thank them for joining in the fun and ensure that the mermaid magic continues even after the party is over.
Keep it short and simple
Remember that kids don't need much. Get creative with food and decorations. Let your creativity flow like the ocean waves and embrace the whimsy of the mermaid world. Kids have such wonderful imaginations that they'll jump right into believing whatever you have created. So don't stress and have fun imagining an underwater treasure trove for your magical mermaid.
